| Sacred Land of the Mother-Sophia by F.X.Aloisio |
Sophia, the Greek transliteration for the word Wisdom, is the personification of the divine feminine, through whom all of creation is born and in Her all of creation is renewed. Sophia is the breath and spirit of God and the feminine image of the eternal Holy Source. So when one speaks about Sophia or the Goddess one is not talking about Gender; it is about Energy or Consciousness. The Mother Goddess is the feminine principle of the same Father God. It is the higher wisdom of the Divine - the Sophia. These masculine and feminine energies are meant to be one.
The Temple People honoured both modes of energy; but the Feminine energy was at the fore during that first grounding phase of our sojourn on earth, as it gave form to the creative principle. The Goddess was thus the living force of creation on Earth - the great generative and nurturing Mother, and the creative force of all forms of life. Women represented this organic energy: they birthed new life and they nurtured the young species of the human race. Thus it was also natural that they venerated the goddess of fertility, and that they honoured the Goddess as it represented this living force of the Mother Earth. These people wanted to create a reverence and appreciation of the feminine energy on earth. There was no Goddess or Matriarchy worship as we understand it or express it in the modern meaning of the word. They had reverence, respect, and honoured the Divinity and its mysterious and magical energy, and they collaborated with its creative plan on earth.
Universal concept: This concept of the mother or goddess is present in all the world religions and beliefs. The same titles given today to the Virgin Mary, like 'Virgin Mother, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, Full of Sorrow…' belonged to her predecessors - Rhea, Demeter, Ishtar, Cybelle, Isis, Artemis, Kuan Yin, in religions that were considered pagan by the developing Christian faith. It seems that even the title of Stella Maris - Star of the Sea, was actually one of the titles attributed to Isis and other pagan goddesses. The established church has adopted many aspects of the mother goddess ideology throughout the centuries in its veneration of the Mother of God. Clearly the mother goddess concept has lived on through all these centuries.
Sophia today: Today there is a renewed interest in Sophia which comes, not surprisingly, at a time in our collective spiritual history when we are at war with ourselves, with one another, and with the environment. People everywhere are looking for a better way of living on this planet - a more wise and peaceful way.
The Birth of Venus, an event which occurred in 2004, brought with it the new energy of the Feminine Spirit. In mythology Venus is the traditional goddess of love, harmony, beauty and rebirth. Thus the energy being transmitted to this planet now, and for the coming years up to 2012, is a loving Feminine Energy. So between this event and its return in 2012, the goddess aspect - the Mother Goddess or the Feminine Energy of the Creator - will radiate more of her attributes and energy throughout the universe: divine love, compassion, illumination, nurture, gratitude, faith, creativity, balance of love, and the inner focus and awareness of Spirit. These blessed energies will enhance, refine and complement the Masculine aspects of the Creator: the divine will of wisdom, truth, valour, decisiveness and power; and the energies to create and to build.
The Malta connection
The connection with the Mother is indeed very present in the Maltese psyche. The Maltese have managed to keep these links with the Mother energy throughout their history, even when they passed from the worship of the goddess of the temple period to the veneration and devotion of the Virgin Mary of the Christian period. You can see this in the many churches and parishes dedicated to the Mother of God. Even the physical surroundings of the Maltese islands are very maternal: the sea is a glittering beautiful deep blue, and warm, earthy, brown hills adorn the landscape.
In the Maltese language the word for mother is Omm, which is the same sound of the universal mantra Aum - the first primordial sound of the universe. In Proto-Sanskrit or Atlantean language aum refers to the feminine energy of god, and it also means the Sun. The word for water in Maltese is ilma, a small word that can be read as il-ma, meaning 'the mother'- the giver of life on earth. In Alchemy, water is classified under the quality of the Mother.
Malta is an experience of the Goddess. The old prehistoric heritage sites, the new Christian era buildings, the landscape and the whole natural environment of the Maltese islands aspire to the maternal expression.
This Divine Feminine Energy of Sophia is totally concentrated in Malta; it is buried and sealed in this sacred ground, waiting in earnest to be re-activated and re-vitalized.
